There’s nothing quite like the anticipation of seeing your favorite artist in concert! After what feels like an eternity, the stage lights dim, and the venue turns black. If you listen closely, you can hear the faint sound of a deep breath as the frontman prepares to deliver a raw and soulful vocal performance. A wave of excitement ripples through the crowd of thousands as they ready themselves to fully immerse in this once-in-a-lifetime auditory experience. As the backing track swells through the stadium, you can hardly hear yourself think as you join in to chant song lyrics at unfathomable volumes. Now, you might be wondering: in all of this deafening noise, what makes it possible to keep your voice heard so clearly?

Before the invention of the microphone, performers had few options for projecting their voices. Beyond mastering breath support and relying on the acoustic properties of their surroundings, there was little else to amplify their sound. As a non-professional vocalist myself, I obviously associate the microphone with the music and entertainment industry, but its significance extends far beyond helping to facilitate grand-scale live performances. The tool may be small in size, but its impact on human society has been monumental. From the beginning of audio recordings and telecommunications, to the thriving realms of film media, the creation of the microphone signifies the technological, cultural, and societal developments that continue to progress in the modern world.
